Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As the sun colours flowers, so does art colour life.

― John Lubbock

Art is my “Therapy”. I have struggled with anxiety most of my life. In a way Art has been my rescue. I have taken professional help too, but the kind of comfort I get when I pick up that brush and paint is just something else.

Become Calm and Relaxed with Watercolors

Before we jump to Watercolors, let’s talk a little about ‘water” what come to mind when I say Water? Something so refreshing, thirst quenching! And Calming! Touching water, feeling water, the sound of water, everything is so soothing! Water can be furious sometimes but it always comes back to its calm state! Same are our minds.

Now imagine mixing colors to the water! That’s what watercolors are all about! Even if your painting does not turn out great you can still make the most out of the process itself. When we are lost in the world of color we seem to to forget all our worries.

Here are 6 Ways Watercolors can help you become Calm and Relaxed

You don’t have to be a talented Artist to experience these benefits. That is a very common myth or misconception that Art requires some inborn talent or creativity.

Watercolor Teaches Mindfulness

Mindfulness simple put is “being in the Present”. As easy as it may sound, it is sometimes very difficult to practice! We often wander in the past or the future as that is easier to do, but to remain in the present and being mindful takes effort.

Making art or painting does just that! When You are painting something, You become so lost in the work that you forget everything else. You pay attention to detail, your let your creativity flow, you are so much there, present in what you are doing, both mentally and physically and that helps calm your mind.

Art can make that easy for you! I you make it a daily practice then gradually you will start learning how to do it and not just that you will also start loving it. Once you practice mindfulness along with painting, it will gradually start reflecting in other aspects of you life as well, for example mindful eating, mindful walking etc.

Art helps you use several parts of your brain and there are studies that prove this!

“The arts create conditions for mindfulness by accessing and engaging different parts of the brain through conscious shifting of mental states”

Watercolor Teaches Focus

When you paint something whether is is with your own creativity or from a reference, or even if you are copying someone’s work (yes it is allowed as long as you don’t share it publicly) you need complete focus. Regular painting will help you improve your focus immensely.

Watercolor Teaches Patience

Once you grab your brush and colors and start with something you don’t feel like leaving it in the midst, or even hurrying through it, so you are much slowed down and take your time. Art teaches us a lot of patience!

Watercolor Encourages Positivity

When you accomplish something, you feel proud of yourself and you feel good about it. Overtime as you keep on learning and your skills improve you become more confident and develop a positive lookout about yourself as an artist. As you receive appreciation and positive feedback about your art you become more and more proud and happy about your work. This results in a calmer and better version of you!

Even researches show that Art of any form relaxes the minds and makes one calmer. As we can see in the following research,

This quasi-experimental study investigated the impact of visual art making on the cortisol levels of 39 healthy adults. Participants provided saliva samples to assess cortisol levels before and after 45 minutes of art making. Participants also provided written responses about the experience at the end of the session. Source

“Results indicate that art making resulted in statistically significant lowering of cortisol levels. Participants’ written responses indicated that they found the art-making session to be relaxing,”

Painting can help you express without saying! You can express your feelings, your emotions and your thoughts through Art. Isn’t this such a powerful thing! When we are anxious with overflowing thoughts, don’t you feel better after you talk to someone, whether it is a close friend, family member or a therapist! But many a times we just don’t feel like “talking”. Art can be your rescue in such moments. Just paint our heart out! Pour in all your feelings, just let it go!

You will feel better, relaxed and calm to a great extent. You will feel lighter.

Always remember when You paint it is more about the process than the end result! Expressing your emotions through Artist a great way of releasing them.

Art can be an excellent and healthy outlet of emotions like love, anger, sadness, fear, frustration etc.

Frida Khalo is a great example, she channelized her pain and frustration through Art in a beautiful way.

“My painting carries with it the message of pain.”

Frida Kahlo
